E-Cigarettes have changed a lot over the last few years, and today there are many different types to suit different types of vapers. So today, we are going to look at the best e-cigarettes with the help of SmokeTastic, who we believe, are one of the first experts to review e-cigs and categorize them for different users.
So where do we start? Well, it makes sense to start with the beginners, but this also falls into a variety of different categories, so although you may be a beginner with e-cigarettes, it still means you have options! We will try to make this is clear as possible throughout this article!
New To Vaping
Use to Smoke or Continue To Smoke
Let’s face it, the number one reason why you should try vaping is to quit or at least cut down traditional smoking. This means that the vast majority of new vapers are ex or current smokers.
Two Basic Types Of Vaping E-Cigs
So there are two different types of vaping, we’re not talking about the actual product, but the way you can vape your e-cigarette. These are categorized as:
- Mouth To Lung
- Direct Lung
Although these types of vaping sound similar, they are very different, so let’s now explain the difference between them.
- Mouth To Lung – This is the typical style that traditional smokers use. Because the filter of the cigarette creates a substantial resistance, the smoker first draws the smoke into their mouth and then into their lungs with a 2 phase-type of method. Most new vapers coming to the e-cigarette market look for mouth to lung e-cigs because they are looking for a similar experience to their smoking habit.
- Direct Lung – This is where the vaper inhales the vape directly to their lungs without holding it in their mouth. Because e-cigs can be produced with very little resistance it’s a lot easier to directly inhale in 1 phase directly to the lungs, just like taking a deep breath of air.
So which is best? Well, there is no best, it’s very similar to comparing how you drink wine! Some like to hold it in their mouths for a second to enjoy the taste, while others prefer to just get on with the drinking!!
Ok, so that’s a bad example, but hopefully, you get what I’m saying here. The important thing to remember is that there is no right type of method of vaping, everyone is different, they have different levels of experience and have different types of goals.
Never Tried Any Type Of Vaping or Smoking
The first question I would have to ask is why on earth would you want to try vaping? It is ridiculous in my eyes that anyone should start vaping for any other reason than to replace of quit their smoking habit. If you have never smoked before and want to try vaping ask yourself a very serious question:
Why do I want to vape e-cigarettes?
If the answer is to impress, join in, or any other social reason, then take a step back and try to earn respect in a respectful way and not by joining the crowd. In the long run, it’s not cool and you will not be impressing anyone and lose your self-respect. SO DON’T VAPE! Nicotine is an addictive substance, and has health implications.
If on the other hand, it is for medical reasons, perhaps you’re looking for a way to inhale your medical marijuana, then you also shouldn’t be looking at the standard e-cigarettes. You need to look more into the dab pens, or oil e-cigs that are produced specifically for this type of substance. We’re not going to be covering that today, but hopefully, in the near future, we will release something as it is quite a detailed area of vaping.
The Types Of E-Cigarettes
So, we have looked at the different options you have concerning the types of vaping, now let’s take a look at the different types of e-cigarettes available. There are many different types of e-cigs, but to make this a little easier to understand, let’s categorize them into 4 groups:
- Cig-a-likes – Also commonly known as Mini E-Cigarettes
- Vape Pods – Also known as Juuls, and Pod Vapes (Although Juul is a brand, not a type of e-cigarette)
- Vape Pens – Also known as Mid-Sized E Cigs and Vaporizer pens
- Vape Mods – Commonly called box mods.
The size of these e-cigarettes seem to go up as you go down the list, and many are fooled that new vapers need to start at the top and work their way down as they become more experienced, but although this is the general advice it is not strictly true. All of these types of e-cig come in starter kit form and can suit both types of vaping (mouth to lung and direct lung) that we discussed before.
The big difference between these types of e cigs is the power, and it’s this power that can make a difference to your vaping experience.
Quick Lesson on Resistance and Why It Matters in E-Cigs
The way the e-cigarette produced the vaper is through a coil, this coil has a certain resistance measured in ohms. The lower the resistance the smoother the draw but the more power you need to produce a vapor. Make sense? Good! But coils come in all different sizes and again to keep things simple we have categorized coils in 2 groups:
- Sub Ohm Coils – known as sub-ohm vaping and used for direct lung inhales
- >1 ohm Coils – Used mainly for mouth to lung due to greater resistance
Why Power Matters
We are going to ignore Cigalikes, as these are low powered devices and can only be used for mouth to lung vaping, the others produce a decent amount of power, but you do need to understand the fundamentals.
You may think that having more power means your battery will last longer, but hopefully, if you understand what we have already discussed you may be thinking differently now. Sub-ohm coils need more power to produce a vapor, but this vapor is thicker and greater in mass. Many call this producing clouds, and that’s strictly true, they do produce a lot more vapor that can sometimes be too much for a new vaper.
Choosing Your First E-Cig
Armed with all this information, you should be in a pretty good position to be thinking about which type of e-cigarette will best suit you. Personally we would skip the Cigalike type and move straight to Vape pen or vape pods. The majority of these are relatively low powered and suit mouth to lung vapers the most, but often come with coils to suit both. So take a look at the coil sizes available so you can try both types of vaping without having to buy a new device.
The chances are your use to mouth to lung smoking, so start with this by using a coil of greater than 1-ohm. When you are ready, switch to the sub-ohm coil and change your vaping technique to direct lung inhales. This is weird to start with, and you may cough as you get use to it, but after a bit of practice you will get use to it and prefer it as an option.
